I put everything back together following my JD service manual. Then I bleed the brakes. Now the brakes are totally locked up. The tractor won't move. But if I open the bleed screws, it will move.

I mentioned couple weeks ago picking up a 4020 w/powershift at local auction. It was 1 owner but we knew the maint was very poor... Changing all fluids and filters --expecting to see some gremlins pop up. Our issue now is the powershift going forward works great. Reverse, not so much.

Don't be real quick to assume the trans pump is bad. The Deere service manual tells how to check for flow and Cliff Nelson had me make a gauge setup to check trans pump pressure. The 4010 and VERY early (IIRC, pre-'65) 4020 tractors DO have a 3rd reverse. The later early models and on only have 2 reverse gears that are sped up. The the early ones, 1st reverse is the same speed as 3rd forward, 2nd reverse is like 5th and 3rd reverse is like 7th. So, 3rd reverse is 12mph. Great for plowing snow. :rock.

I was able to fix it by shortening the park cable. You can do this behind the dash by taking off the hood cowl (I think that's what it's called). It has a threaded end so it can be shortened. #1. 4020 synchro has a dry clutch and the tranny is not particularly notorious for jumping out of fear under ANY conditions unless badly worn. Powershift still has a dry clutch at the flywheel, a "torque limiter", and in the earlier serial numbers it can be disengaged with a separate little lever to make cold weather starting easier.But the 4020, 4230, etc. use large-frame starters the larger starter-solenoid can sometimes draw - or surge close to 20 amps. When hooked directly to a standard ignition switch or push-button - that gets a little worn - it can cause a problem. Using the extra relay in-between takes the load off the ignition switch.

Provided the tractors does not have any external oil leakage (lines, fittings, ???.) you have either an internal leak in the steering motor piston o-rings up front or a problem in the steering valve under the dash or possibly both. Make sure this tractor is 12V. Check the six weep holes on the left side of the block, make sure there's no sign of coolant discoloring the paint below the holes. The 4020 was a wet sleeve engine, they didn't tend to cavitate like IH engines but o-ring sealing problems were fairly common.
