You'll never maintain weight with vegetables alone. You could trap but I find fishing much easier. It does mean your base needs to be near water. It makes the nutritionist trait have more value. But it's just a very opaque mechanic. The weight stuff is based on a lot of hidden numbers, plus a bunch of the nutrition values for foods don't translate to reality. Neither does the magnitude or rate of weight gain/loss. It isn't particularly intuitive and it isn't ever explained..
