I've got a P365, P365XL, and a P320 X5 Legion. The slide catch lever does release on all three with an empty mag inserted. It was more difficult at first but got easier as more rounds were fired through it like others have experienced. Personal opinion only and not a cut at the Hellcat or Springfield brand. OP, there is absolutely no reason not to buy a Sig P365. The problem is likely to be just finding one in the current environment. I've been on the Notify List at Palmetto and Brownell's for a few weeks with no results.

The jammed slide may have this spring off of the slide lock lever and is under the bottom of the slide lock lever, preventing yhe slide lock lever from moving down to unlock the slide.
